The hallmark of a true Christian is not just accepting Christ as Lord and Savior, but giving of yourself to others and spreading God’s love throughout the world, in the church, but most importantly, in the community. Though we live in Northern Virginia, one of the most affluent areas in the entire United States, there is still work to be done to help those less fortunate than ourselves. It is our mission to shine as examples of those who seek Jesus and care about healing our community, especially by spreading love through service. By doing so, we ultimately better all of God’s magnificent creation. Our primary purpose is to try and be just as loving and giving as God. Our commitment is to service, and our ministry seeks not to close itself off to the the world, but rather open our hands to give.
There are a variety of ways you can get involved in spreading love through service by serving your neighbors and the greater Northern Virginia community. Our service and outreach programs at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church have given needed care, comfort and hope to those we serve, and we hope that you can be inspired to contribute, and become an extension of the ministry. Here is a great list of service activities you can involve yourself in to help bring a smile to someone’s face and healing to the world. Reach out to Pastor Paul from Fairfax Christ Lutheran Church for more information on how to get involved in the ministry’s service projects.
Helping Feed Low Income Families
Providing food and assistance to those who are hungry and less fortunate is a wonderful way to serve others and help the community. There are many non-profit organizations in the Northern Virginia community that are active in providing meals for struggling families. One organization, Britepaths, helps low-income families by providing a food program for selected Fairfax County families. There are also Northern Virginia churches who deliver food to homeless shelters every month. Charities like these allow you to be an instrument of God’s kindness in giving these families the food and supplies they need.
Helping Homeless Neighbors
Clothing, feeding, and providing a home for our homeless neighbors is one of the best ways to be of service. Organizations like FACETS, The Fairfax Area Christian Emergency & Transitional Services, provide homeless and financially struggling individuals with daily meals. Homeless shelters like the Lamb Center also provide those without homes shelter, food, and other services. Here, Pastor Paul leads chapel services during the week. This could be an opportunity for you to learn more about God and be of help to His children in a unique way, spreading love through service. Getting active in volunteering for the Salvation Army is another great way to be of service as well, along with helping the Hypothermia Project every winter sponsored by FACETS to provide the homeless with warm food and shelter.
Helping Those In Times Of Crisis
There are many crisis centers and organizations for you to volunteer for. The Fairfax Immediate Sympathetic Help is one that is there to help those who with problems due to money, food, and clothing. They provide assistance to the needy and elderly in Fairfax County. There are also many crisis hotlines and centers for you to be of assistance to. The Domestic Violence Action Center here in Fairfax is an organization that helps battered women and their families receive the help and care they need in times of severe distress. By helping those in pain and in need, that is where we can truly find God’s love.
Fairfax Christ Lutheran is a participant in Habitat For Humanity, an organization that builds housing for low income families. Getting involved in this organization will bring you joy in helping those who hope for a better home to live in realize that dream. Many other churches and community members are involved in our project as well.
Opportunities of spreading love through service in the community are plentiful, this is just one of the many ways that God gives us opportunities to heal the world, right in our own backyard. By reaching out your hand to your brothers and sisters, you will receive more satisfaction than anything else you would have expected to gain from a personal goal. You can truly make a difference in your community and in the world by offering your love to give to others and share in their experiences.
